History of City Gas Distribution In India

City Gas Distribution means distribution, supply and sale of gaseous fuel through underground pipe lines to various uses in a city is known as City Gas Distribution (CGD). Historically, there are evidence that similar kind of gas distribution was started in Indian at British Time. In 1857, two gas distribution companies Bombay Gas Company and Oriental Gas Company Ltd. (OGCL) were started in two cities Bombay and Calcutta respectively . That time, these two cities were having strong commercial and political importance for British India. These companies were distributing Coal Gas as fuel successfully for years. Bombay Gas Company was closed but OGCL was acquired by State Govt. and known as Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation Ltd . With discovery of Natural Gas in 1960 in Gujarat and Assam, Natural Gas started supplying to few customers (Probably industries) in Gujarat and Assam.
